Waiting for the Return of the Fishing Fleet

         After Winslow Homer

She knows the truth—that she may wait
with us for hours, that he’ll be late,
that this raw light will burn her eyes,
that she’ll grow weary as she tries
for patience, that sometimes she’ll hate

the sea that he must navigate,
      the sun that will illuminate
its bitter sparkle and its size—
      she knows. The truth

is that if she should choose a mate
like ours, she’ll learn the awful weight
      of water, as love amplifies
the depths of fear. Though now she cries,
      “There’s Daddy!” and we celebrate,
      she knows the truth.
