You'd have to be an alchemist
to start transmuting falsity
into a drop of constancy —
when it's so spite-stained and stale as this!

Why stress? why head-poundingly persist
on wasting time so fruitlessly?
You'd have to be an alchemist
to start transmuting falsity.

You ransack books, poor scientist,
but who can know the recipe?
Who makes good rise yeast-like from cruelty
when they are mortal enemies?

They'd have to be an alchemist ...

Thanks, Julie, for setting this up! Here's my (somewhat freer) shot at it.

Best, Bruce

You would need unknown magic
and a cauldron at boil
to forge "Blessed," "True," "Loyal"
from "Faithless," "Mean, "Tragic."

You would make yourself mad;
you'd be wasting your time
and all the magic you had
to turn "Hellish" "Sublime."

Your packed bookshelf is tragic.
You will find, by and by,
the best spells that you try
won't make truth from a lie.
You will need unknown magic.

You'd have to prestidigitate
to turn a pure and blatant lie
into the truth. I'll tell you why:
lies are made of spite and hate.

It does no good to cogitate.
You'd waste your time. Don't even try.
You'd have to prestidigitate
to make a true thing from a lie.

The more you try to contemplate,
the less that meets the eye,
for falsity would nullify
its opposite, and truth would die.
You can't just prestidigitate.

You'd have to practice alchemy, kid,
to mould a pure heart for me.
My chest is clogged up, cracked up, corroded,
swollen with spite and enmity.

Why this headache for us both with
your maddening quest, Don Quixote?
You'd have to practice alchemy, kid,
to mould a pure heart for me.

You study hard, love's scientist, boy,
but you'll never find the recipe.
Why search for such a foolish toy
as a heart, when it opposes me?
You'd have to practice alchemy.

Truth and lies are gold and lead.
Now as I ponder what you said
I try to change the state of play
by putting it another way
or altering the emphasis
to turn a low blow to a kiss.

Im on the case, but as I try
to mitigate a cruel lie
by altering the understood
from something bad to something good
I gradually come to see
the need for modern alchemy.
And here it is the very thing!
Neuro-linguistic programming.

I dreamed I was an alchemist
and with my honeyed pliantesse
I took your lies and trans-supposed
them till they glowed like ruby truths.

But I’m as mad as moonlit hares,
through seeking fool’s gold faultlessness.
I’d really rather sleep than shape
the glassy flaws of faithlessness.

I studied stars. Their copper lights
showed facts as moments, failing fast
in unfixed trails through unkempt nights
to grace the baseless earth at last.

It would be an alchemical feat
if you could turn lies or deceit
into straight dealing,
but I've got a feeling
you can't, so you're still just a cheat.

Alchemy blasphemy.
Annie, ingenuous,
heats in a crucible
falseness and hope.

Watches it eagerly,
overexcitedly
stirring the synthesis -
truth, is it? Nope.

An alchemist would have his work
cut out with someone such as you!
When Spite and Envy are allowed to twerk
inside your strobing heart
how the hell am I expected
to make you true!?
