Default Minimum Pay Rate

If wishes were nickels
and a daydream a quarter
I could live on lollipops,
cough drops and water.
But I hear we’ll be getting
$15 an hour,
that’s $120 a day.
At that rate it lies in my power,
if I go get a job right away,
to be in nine months to a year a
retiree on the French Riviera.

This song from the musical The Pajama Game is commercially copyrighted, and appears here only for non-commerical use. Your "Minimum Pay Rate" reminds me of it.

I figured it out
I figured it out
With a pencil and a pad I figured it out!
Seven and a half cents doesn't buy a hell of a lot,
Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a thing!
But give it to me every hour,
Forty hours every week,
And that's enough for me to be living like a king!
I figured it out {He figured it out!}
I figured it out, {He figured it out!}
With a pencil and a pad, I figured it out!
Only five years from today!
Only five years from today!
I can see it all before me!
Only five years from today!
Five years! Let's see.that's 260 weeks, times forty hours every week
And roughly two and a quarter hours overtime
At time and a half for overtime! Comes to exactly. $852.74!
That's enough for me to get
An automatic washing machine,
A years supply of gasoline,
Carpeting for the living room,
A vacuum instead of a blasted broom,
Not to mention a forty-inch television set!
So, although seven and a half cents doesn't buy a heck of a lot
Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a thing
But give it to me every hour, forty hours every week
And that's enough for me to be living like a king!
I figured it out, {she figured it out!}
I figured it out, {She figured it out!}
Only ten years from today
Only ten years from today
I can see it, clear as daylight
Only ten years from today!
Ten years! Let's see, that's 520 weeks, times forty hours every week
And roughly two and a quarter hours overtime
At time and a half for overtime! Comes to exactly. $1705.48!
That's enough for me to buy
A trip to France across the seas
A motorboat and water skis
Maybe even a foreign car
A charge account at the corner bar
Not to mention a scrabble board with letters made of gold!
So, although seven and a half cents doesn't buy a heck of a lot
Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a thing
But give it to me every hour
Forty hours every week
And that's enough for me to be living like a king!
We figured it out, {They figured it out!}, {They figured it out!}
We figured it out, {With a pencil and a pad they figured it out}
Only twenty years from today
Only twenty years from today
I can see it like a vision
Only twenty years from today
Twenty years! Let's see.
That's 1040 weeks, times forty hours every week
And roughly two and a quarter hours overtime
At time and a half for overtime! Comes to exactly. $3411.96!
Wow!
That's enough for me to be
A sultan in a taj mahal
In every room a different doll
I'll have myself a buying spree
I'll buy a pajama factory
Then I could end up having Old Man Hasler work for me!
So, although seven and a half cents doesn't buy a heck of a lot
Seven and a half cents doesn't mean a thing
But give it to me every hour, forty hours every week,
And that's enough for me to be living like a king!
For non-commercial use only.

Ha!!
I never heard or read that Lyric before, Thanks for posting it. Allen.

BTW, did your family ever have a member who was a Baptist minister down in Chilton County, Alabama? When I was a little boy i was taken to hear Preacher Tice at Sardis Church every Sunday plus funerals, etc., for at least 7 years (1932-39).

There are fairly detailed family trees for those Tices (and others) who are what are called Pennsylvania Dutch people. Your Tice might have escaped, so to speak. There is a town in Florida named Tice. And I encountered a Tice selling art in NYC outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art whose ancestry as far as he knew was English. I followed through with his British relatives. My final conclusion is that they probably came to the British Isles when many Huguenots fled persecution centuries ago, and that some pacifist Anabaptists Mennonites came along too. The Plain People of the Pennsylvania Dutch are very conservative Mennonites. The most fun is that at the time when Rembrandtís first (and properly only) wife (a Dutch Mennonite) was alive, he lived for a while in a house, one of the co-owners of which was named Thijsz, which is my name spelled in old Dutch. Thatís all I can tell you now. I think, though, that I am possibly truly and genuinely related to Rembrandtís wife. My Tice branch line came to America about 170-190 years ago. Others in my family predate the Revolution by a fair bit.

I can't follow the whimsical logic of the first four lines or see any connection between them and the rest.

I assume that "wishes were nickels" postulates a price that the speaker would pay for them, but even if the speaker earned a nickel for each wish, which nudges the sense in the direction of connection, I can't make the link. FWIW.
