One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
The latest edition of Philosophy Now (Aug/Sep 2021 issue 145) focuses on existentialism. And I have a villanelle there inspired by Camus' Myth of Sisyphus

Love it! The lad is irresistible. I've done several, not nearly as good as this.

Congratulations, Joe :-)
Great poem; and I like the cartoon too, in which the boulder looks a bit like a brain. That's interesting <(:-)
Best wishes,
Fliss

Very good villanelle. The form certainly fits the subject. I, however, wish they came through with a more artful illustration. Certainly not a cartoon. But I'm an art snob. Just as I am a villanelle snob. I like the form, and I like this one.

Hi Joe,
I concur with the generality in thinking this poem of yours is splendid. Frankly, I like it quite a bit more than the Marmite/Fall poem you posted in Met! Though "savory and wrong" there is superb - thanks for that.
Somehow a villanelle is perfect for the task of Sisyphus as Camus imagines it. I am so glad the idea came to you and you executed it so cleanly.
I quite like the brain-cartoon, after my initial shock.
Cheers,
John

Nice one Joe, and congrats on getting it into non-poetry journal.

Thanks all.
Yes I was a bit nonplussed by the cartoon – not really the tone I was aiming for in the villanelle. But not a bad cartoon and I imagine in the print edition there will be other text around it that will dilute the juxtaposition. Either way,I’m just happy to find a home for it. And yes it was satisfying to know that my understanding of Camus could pass muster in a philosophy journal.
Cheers
Joe

Congratulations, Joe, your poem is great. I love villanelles.
I've also just read my four free (really excellent) articles in this issue - and I'm blown away by how interesting it all is! Wouldn't it have been great to meet Camus and have some fascinating conversations with him?
