Here's something a little different. The performance is great, but Bernstein's introductory remarks are what really strike me. What he says about music, of course, is much like what could be said about poetry.

The music, dynamically beautiful - and what a fantastically clear, and accessible, introduction to how we dialogue with texts of all types. I love how Bernstein ‘shows’, too - the examples are so clear - and that segueing into the performance - ‘it will not be a dull, literal playing of the notes’. Thank you!

Yes, that Bernstein video is fantastic. Gould is mesmerizing to watch. As is Bernstein's mastery of the orchestra. I remember well Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts growing up. We watched it faithfully every Sunday night as a family.

Now that you've mentioned him (Bernstein), it gives me a chance to revisit one of his greatest songs: "Somewhere" from West Side Story. Here is an exploration of the song's origin and the lyrics that Sondheim put to the music. I could spend hours immersed in this kind of exploration.

Was feeling sad this evening, and went to one of my go-to, feel-good songs:

Kris Fuchigami - 'Ukulele cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Love, love, love the solo at about 3:40 in.

When I want to take my mind off to a very different place, I like to go here. Somewhere in South Korea, I think, (but not K pop!).

It is so stylishly done. Costumes, dancers, singers, music. I have no idea what is going on but it is captivating. And I come away with a huge smile.

I love the Bernstein and Gould. Bernstein took being an educator seriously and I appreciate that.

Even if you aren't a listener of jazz the power and beauty, simple words for simple genius, of this young lady's voice will take you places.

Default What's Yours

I find that nothing cheers me up as much as this one:

(When I tried to listen, the message came up that this was "no longer available." But you can find several versions, and it's Stan Rogers singing "The Mary Ellen Carter.")

I really enjoyed that bouncy, cheerful little number, Gail. Thank you for posting it

I did, too - and loved the metaphor.

Here's some Spiers and Boden, probably my favourite folk duo of all time, with something equally upbeat, but with less uplifting a metaphor (more of a 'get on with then' metaphor).

And to something that is probably not uplifting, but possibly perfect for a rainy Saturday night in May - Luna's Bonnie and Clyde
