The story goes that Putin had been looking for a land bridge to Moldova with a puppet state to its north with no coastline. Now he seems to be settling, at least at present, for a land bridge to the Crimea - hence, Mariupol. I'm not sure the Ukrainians can prevent him taking the town, but they can continue to make this war very painful for him. Here's hoping. As to what Putin will stop at, I can't think of anything much. Possibly nukes. With Russian forces on the ground there, it would not help, one has to assume, in future recruitment to his Russian army.
