Weird - I was quoting that very movie not two weeks ago in another poem! Endeavor to persevere indeed... Here he is now discussing all kinds of edges: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC-AXJ00ipc And then here's the better and proper link to the full scene there, with endeavor to persevere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atzmdijMfRY

Both films speak to me, but Little Big Man speaks to me in particular and has done since I saw it as a child. I think it was a Sherman Alexie story where a guy says "You may be Native American, but you sure aren't American Indian." If that means anything, it may mean there's no such thing as "part Native American," which has been my line for years in conversation. I thought about that last night. And then I endeavored to persevere.
It seems to me honestly that the whole planet is in tune except the human beings on it. So I see your point. But maybe that's why Chief Dan George asks the Grandfather to stop his son from going crazy, which is all too easy to have happen sometimes. And Dustin Hoffmann does indeed go crazy for a while, before his "You go down there" speech.
Which is right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWGAdzn5_KU

Update: just to say, Tawahum Bige writes a powerful poem. Sorry, I was distracted. The Boomtown Rats have a song that says "Black and blue uniforms, / Police and priests," which seems a propos.

Cheers,
John

Today is the deadline for BIPOC writers to submit early and free of reading fees, at "Ecotone." Here is the link again:

Good luck.

Default BIPOC submissions

By the way -- there is another phenomenon arising in fashion, which I failed to note in my previous posts. That is, more and more journals are reading submissions year round from BIPOC writers, outside the rule window for white writers. The Massachusetts Review, for example, which says on its website:

"N.B. Submissions from authors who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color will be accepted year-round; however, outside our regular reading period, when the online submission manager is shut down, all submissions from BIPOC writers should be sent by regular mail or emailed to massrev@external.umass.edu."

You can find those guidelines here: https://www.massreview.org/submissio...ral-guidelines

The Indiana Review has now opened a window until the 31st, free of reading fees, exclusively for submissions from Black and Indigenous writers:

That's good to know. I'm not BIPOC but I can push/support on social media.
