Default Food for Thought

He ate and drank the precious Words –
His Spirit grew robust –
He knew no more that he was poor,
Nor that his frame was Dust –
He danced along the dingy Days
And this Bequest of Wings
Was but a Book – What Liberty
A loosened Spirit brings –

Franklin 1593, as above;
Johnson 1587, divides as quatrains; does not cap Spirit L8

"A mob of solid bliss," as Miss Dickinson would say.

They storm the earth and stun the air,
A mob of solid bliss.
Alas! that frowns could lie in wait
For such a foe as this!

I love Emily D. I think she's a first glimpse of modern and contemporary poetry. Her quirks are wonderful and no small part of what makes her still relevant. Parting isn't at the top of my list of her poems. And it does read, for the most part, as dated. But those last two lines have always stuck with me. I remembered them for years not remembering the poem. And they are clearly, strikingly, modern.
