I want to leave that line as it is. It's the suggestion that's funny. It also says something about the narrator and it's a good closer for the first stanza, setting up a turn.
It's a dog poem, but a good dog poem, and I don't see many of those. The dog is just there, and the poem quietly and effectively says as much about the owner as the dog.
