A sad parody that one, Ralph. I have sympathy with the sentiments. Is it the time of year?

Don’t worry! It’s a persona poem, not personal, a takedown of the hubris displayed by Henley’s persona. It's hard to believe H wasn't being hyperbolic!

I also had in mind the image Rattle has up now for its Eckphrastic challenge.

STUCK IN MY HOUSE MAN?

Into my heart an air that kills
from yon far country blows.
What is that cruel virus that spills,
what ugly masks are those?

Where is the land of lost content,
now will you please explain
the empty highways where I went
and may not come again.

After Bob Dylan’s “License to Kill”

License to Grill

My neighbor thinks ’cause it’s summer now it’s time to barbecue
And the slightest hint of sunshine, then he will.
Oh, it’s only a quarter to four
And there’s smoke pouring in at my door.

Now, there’s a vegan on my block,
She just sit there as the night grows still.
She say who gonna take away his license to grill?

Now he’s drinking cans of lager, he’s taken off his shoes.
Soon he’ll fill himself with burgers that make him ill.
Then he’ll stay up half the night,
Very likely get into a fight.

Now, there’s a vegan on my block,
She just sit there facin’ the hill.
She say who gonna take away his license to grill?

Now, he’s roasting bits and pieces of chicken, pork and beef,
And he thinks this kind of cooking takes great skill.
He believes that the meaning of fun
Is getting very drunk in the sun.

But there’s a vegan on my block,
Sitting there in a cold chill.
She say who gonna take away his license to grill?

Yeah, he’s a noisemaker, troublemaker,
Lawbreaker, wiseacre,
Leaves no steak unturned.
You’d never guess that Geoff
was such a good chef.
That’s another sausage burned.

Now he worships at his altar with its stinking coals,
And when they’re glowing to perfection he’s fulfilled.
Oh, the man is opposed to fair play,
He wants it all and he wants it his way.

Now, there’s a vegan on my block,
She just sit there as the night grows still.
She say who gonna take away his license to grill?

Duncan

PS Hear me singing it here.

Selected Ralphverbs

Christofascism is killing democracy.

I have emotions too old to be useful.

Drops of poison in the well do not bode well.

The longer I live, the shorter my temper.

Haste makes pudding.

This sphere is out of joints.

Telephones don’t ring in empty houses.

Humans were a really bad idea.

When I'm online, I'm mostly offline.

Optimism is fishing without bait.

Appleonian man is poisoned.

Winonysian man is wild.

Trumpenstein’s stitches are loose.

GOP: They gave it their best, which was their worst.

Stealing words diminishes life.

Did I mention I’m Sicilian?

Nice one, Ralph :-)

I wrote some sort of take on Tennyson's Eagle during NaPoWriMo, but I don't know whether it's parody, in the strict sense.

The Fish

She sails the seas with silken spines;
Amidst the waves in languid lines,
One with the turquoise tides she shines.

The weathered rock above her looms;
She shelters in the tumbling spumes,
Then, like a submarine, she zooms.

Probably a bit rubbish, but fun to write!

Best wishes,
Fliss

I like the tongue in cheekiness. But it's not really an attack as are many parodies but what I'd call a pastiche, a positive attitude toward the original. I've written way too many pastiches, but as exercises they help keep rhythm and rhyme skills sharp.

Thanks, Ralph. Yes, pastiche is the word. I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
