Default Coastal walking for the hard of hearing

The wind is a bully, in hearing aids:
making itself
and nothing else heard.
So out they come,
and calm is restored,
the world reduced to a silent film

or, as I am with friends,
a benevolent dumbshow.
Not that they are dumb,
and when they pause at a junction,
gesticulating in different ways,
I smile and really donít mind.

As I try to avoid all the pratfalls,
or a passing seagullís custard pie,
all I can hear is piano music,
although in this hat,
judging by my shadow,
I might be the comic relief.

Very funny. And the roaring wind making the world into a silent movie is a great conceit. I'm off for exactly that kind of walk right now.

David, I was sitting beside someone who is hard of hearing, too, when I first read this, and he laughed with recognition! You've given a marvellous word-picture of the comedy of the situation. It's all so clear to see, and because of that it's also so clear to understand how it must be not to be able to hear properly. That's clever.

Good one, Cally-lad!!

Cally

Allen, I assume it's the sound of that improvised, rinky-dink piano that provided live accompaniment to silent comedies.

I agree a good one. I see nothing to change.

You might add "theatre" to piano (or organ). Could cut "can"?
Your "hat" is clever.

Thanks, Orwn.

And thank you, Mark. Hope you enjoyed the walk.

Cally, great to know that this struck a chord with a fellow sufferer (if that's the word). That's the best sort of validation. Thank you for that.

And thank you, Allen. Mark has it on the piano-playing. (I also like the other connotation of piano here.) I think I'm over my trolling suspicions now. They were only ever very vague.

Thanks John!

To sum up, in fact, thanks all.

Cheers

David

I agree that this has a lot to recommend it. You might consider cutting some of the explanation.

You might get more mileage out of describing the gesticulations, rather than "gesticulating in different ways" (or maybe just cutting the unhelpful "in different ways").

FWIW.
