BTW, Kevin, in searching for an alternative translation I came across this. You have apparently published your translation before, and I see that you edited it on another site only yesterday.
Yes, I have. A lot of native Russian speakers use that site, so it can be helpful for getting some feedback, although like anywhere, it is difficult to get good, constructive feedback.

You've received a great deal on this thread, you're just pseudo-ignoring it

I can see where those without a special interest in the poet and his time might find the original and the translation uninteresting. I’m biased and find anything by Derzhavin or Pushkin interesting, no matter how slight. Theirs was a time when the very concept of Russian poetry was still being invented, and everything was new. I suspect Roger didn’t find another translation of this poem. Kevin’s may be the first, so he too is a pioneer—with all the searching and open horizons that implies.

If I'm unlikely to find another translation, that doesn't automatically make it a hidden gem. Perhaps other translators passed on it because they had no desire to write a bad poem in English simply because it was a translation of a bad poem in Russian. I agree that, from a scholarly perspective, there's a good argument that everything Derzhavin wrote should be translated, though I imagine the limited audience with a special interest in Derzhavin would probably be comfortable with the original.

Personally I admire how Derzhavin could delve into the depths, soar into the heights, relax in such simplicity (as in this piece), and poke around in playful pieces. The average English speaker can't really see this diversity of the poet and his work when so many of his pieces are mostly "unchartered territory" in terms of being translated into English.

One translation at least means it is no longer as "hidden" as it used to be, gem or not. If you don't know something exists, you don't even get the chance to see if you think it is a gem or not.

But a poem doesn't need to be a gem to be a good poem. Sometimes just a sparkle in the eye or a smile is good enough. Sometimes not. "Different strokes for different folks". The diversity of expectations and subjective reactions pretty much rules out any objective reality to a proclamation of "good" or "bad".
