Good question, Ann. I'm afraid I've only read snippets of his in review articles - and my impression was, unsurprisingly, that it's very Clive James. I really loved Alasdair Gray's very personal selective version and mourn that he died before he could furnish the last two volumes, especially the final one, with much in the way of his trademark illustrations. I don't know if Dante was at all 'like' Gray as a personality but he clearly felt an affinity with his great predecessor. In any case Gray is a huge loss and for that alone I treasure 'his' Dante.
As to 'luxury' editions, price aside (which of course it can't be!) they seem to be prone to using Longfellow - alas.

I'm with Nigel on the Clive James. It's interesting mainly as an artifact of a significant writer, but not as a reliable medium for drawing close to Dante's world and art. That's my take on Merwin's Purgatorio, too, fwiw.
