Inspired by the 'ooh and ah', I suggest this poem be considered a 'firework poem', written and performed for a specific event. I was once commissioned to write a poem to mark the launch of a Morris group. I'm sure the poem would not be received well by professional poets, but it was appropriate for the audience and time :-)

More condescending drivel from William Logan? Ho-hum. Although the guy does give good self-parody.

The point isn’t that Logan is right about the poem. It’s that he’s blind and ignorant about the history and importance of what happened on January 20th. So great, he sees what everyone here sees about the poem and decided to waste space in a review to point it out. That he is blind to how wonderful it was just to see a young, intelligent black woman standing in front of America after four years of the most racist president since Andrew Johnson points how small a human he is, even if he may be better at moving words around.

At this point, the libs aren’t even hiding that the whole thing was about relatively shallow optics rather than either poetic or, as Joe “nothing will fundamentally change” Biden is making quite clear, political substance. Being... ahem... skeptical about such things isn’t meanness of spirit, it is a prerequisite to not being used by one or other of the wings of what Gore Vidal aptly called the Property Party.

Yes, Quincy, I'm sure Logan was motivated by his disdain for the "Property Party" and his allegiance to some sort of Marxist cocktail chatter delivered in snarky one-liners.

I doubt he was. That the inaugural festivities lulled you straight back into Obama-era complacency when allowing one's self to do so is extremely dangerous does not make the poem any better or its central message less pernicious.

It lulled us back out of the Trump era, which you alone don't seem to view as any worse than the Obama era but the rest of us were very relieved to turn the page on.

It rhymes and it preaches from the Bible. I admit -- I did not see that coming.
