Default Robert Mezey Commemoration

Spherians who, like me, began visiting Eratosphere early in the 2000s, will remember the contributions of Robert Mezey, insightful and forthright as they often were, and marked by his deep and knowledgeable commitment to the craft of verse. As many of you will know, Bob died on 25 April last year. His family and friends, many of them students of his, have organized a “virtual” commemorative event for him via Zoom. This will take place during the afternoon of the anniversary of his death, on Sunday 25 April. Details can be found below.

Default Bob Mezey

Thank you so much for this, Clive. Mr. Mezey was a gentleman and a scholar, who always, always treated me with respect and professional equity -- when he had every right to condescend. May his spirit live forever.

Best,
Jennifer

Sorry to have missed this.
He was a good friend of Tim Murphy.

Indeed, he was. Until the hour of Tim's death (and I know -- I was with him till the end, and before then, with him constantly, so that he told me many stories), Tim extolled Mr. Mezey.

Default Murphy to Mezey

To Julien
for Robert Mezey

He mourns you, as only a doting mother
or an old grandfather can,
as Catullus mourned his brother.
Your death at two,
it was the hardest blow to any man
I’ve ever seen. Now you are ten,
a boy soprano in the choir
where God suspends you on a wire
in every angel’s view
above the basso voices of the men.

Julien, pray for Robert in your heaven.
Let him embrace you when you’re twenty-seven.

Thanks Clive. I'm a huge fan of Robert Mezey and all he did for poetry, especially here in Southern California. At first, I was confused and thought the Zoom reading was THIS April--and got excited--but I see your post was from last year! Thanks for the poem, Jennifer. Tim Murphy, another great one.

Charlotte
