Default Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road is my all-time favorite novel, but I have a strange dread of its being brought to the screen, even though the film has received good reviews. Here's Hitchens's take on the novel:

It annoys hell out of me to have to admit that Hitchens is a superb writer and critic. Fascinating review. I'm sorry to say that I haven't even heard of the novel. (Foreign intruder.) The "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" clue plus a few days (years ago) with friends in New Canaan helped me to understand the general thrust of things.

Thanks Sam. I enjoyed the trip.

I have to admit that I tried reading the novel after reading the Hitchens review, and could not see what all the fuss was about.
I kept thinking, "Why are these two silly people always quarreling?
Can't either of them give a soft answer? Or a rational one?"

Maybe this is just supercilious smugness on my part, but I couldn't take these people seriously.

Hey--I love that book. And the protagonists are supposed to be a bit pretentious.

I love the book, too! Now I'm beginning to miss the days when it was an underground, word-of-mouth sort of classic. Have they reissued it with DiCaprio and Winslet on the cover yet? Agh.

Well, this is why I don't read much 20th century fiction.
As a domestic tragedy, RR just did not seem to be on the
same level as Jude the Obscure.
