Real Name - Impossible to Transliterate - Probably A Series of Whistles
LISTEN
Who would have ever thunk
that this bi-colored hunk
would be a movie star
(although he drove no car)
and leap into your heart?
He played the leading part,
where he made quite a splash
(although he got no cash).
At the end he jumped to freedom
and went back to his sea-dom.
A foot note: Happily,
in real life they set him free.

Jerry,
No, not Flipper. Close relative, though.
Someone's gotta know this.

Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum
A literary genius of the first degree
Who tried to set men free,
And worshiped the ingenuity of man
And a great architectural plan.

The whale was Keiko, Marion, and the poor guy's hunkitude was diminished by a lifelong Boy named Sue problem. Keiko is a girl's name. When they set him free the other whales just laughed and laughed.

Michael,
Yep--Keiko!
I've heard it as a girls name-- maybe it's both. I believe it means "good luck" in Japanese.
After Keiko achieved fame as the star of "Free Willy," his fans launched a massive campaign to free him. As a result, he was set free in the sea off of Iceland. His handlers tried to teach him to become a wild whale, and he did learn to hunt, but he was so used to humans, he ended up hanging out on the coast of Norway, where he socialized with the many fans who came to see him. He died several years ago, and was greatly mourned all over the world.
I cried my eyes out when I saw "Free Willy" and fell in love with this beautiful creature, as well as killer whales, forever.
Here's a clip from FREE WILLY .

Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum redux
It is happiness, we must begin,
With self-interest and reason, to win,
And religion must go.
Let's not sacrifice, so
We don't waste ourselves on someone's sin.

Please correct my scorecard *wink*

Back at ya, Marion:
In the days when Flipper ruled the sea
and earned such lucrative ratings
the writers of the other BC*
were receiving constant beratings
they imported a Lassie from over down under
of a different gender (they’d vouch)
and species, which made Americans wonder
what the hell a male keeps in a pouch.

OK, Jerry. Good thing you told me, since this is going on your permanent record. Glad you're up on your cetacean celebs.
Michael, presumably when Keiko was freed, he went by his signature whistle rather than his showbiz name. So most likely he didn't have the Boy Named Sue stigma. (Who was the boy named Sue anyway?)
