Truly, I live in dark times! A guileless word
is foolish, as is an unfurrowed brow.
A laughing person simply has not heard
the horrors that make the rest of us weep now.

What times are these, when talking of one’s trees
is sinful in its failure to condemn
misdeeds? Does that calm man, crossing the street,
forget his friends who look for help to him?

It’s true, I work and earn a living still,
but that is accident. A few alms tossed
do not give. me the right to eat my fill.
If, somehow, my luck fails, then I am lost.

“Eat and drink,” they say, “and count each blessing!”
How can I steal the food of one in need,
or water from one thirsting, thus transgressing
most selfishly? Yet still I drink and feed.

I would embrace the wisdom of old books
that tell me how to spend my fleeting days,
keeping myself from being caught by hooks
of strife and fear, avoiding violent ways.

Repaying with good the evils that I suffer
is counted wise. I promote my own designs.
Suppressing them in favor of another
I cannot: Truly, I live in dark times!

I came to cities in chaos. Hunger ruled.
I came to desperate people who revolted.
With them my defiant spirit never cooled.
So was my time, given on earth, devoted.

I ate my food between the battles. I slept
with murderers. In hasty embraces I floated.
Nature could not help me to accept.

The streets in my time led into the mires.
My speech betrayed me to the butchers, voted

Our forces were few. Our goal lay far away,

You, who will appear from the awful flood
into which we have sunk, remember, too,
when you speak of the weakness in our blood,
the darkness of the times you never knew.

Changing lands more often than our shoes,
we roamed, making our way through the class wars,
empty of hope, defying the taboos,
we find injustice, yet no outrage roars.

We know that hate, even against the vile
distorts the features. Anger, even when just,
makes us hoarse. Oh, why is it such a trial
to give friendship to those we want to trust?

But when the time comes for us all to be
a help to others, remember us mercifully.

Es ist wahr: ich verdiene noch meinen Unterhalt

Als da Hunger herrschte.

Truly, I live in dark times!

The unsuspicious word is foolish. A smooth forehead
suggests insensitivity. The laughing man
has simply not yet received
the terrible news.

What kind of times are these, where
a conversation about trees is almost a crime
because it considers silence appropriate for so many misdeeds.
Is that man there, peacefully crossing the street,
probably no longer available for his friends
who are in need?

It is true: I still earn my living
but believe me, that is only an accident. Nothing
of those things that I do give me the right to eat my fill.
By chance I have been spared. (If my luck gives out, I am lost.)

I’m told: eat and drink! Be glad for what you have!
But how can I eat and drink if
I rip what I eat from the starving and
a person dying of thirst is lacking my glass of water?
And still I eat and drink.

I would also gladly be wise.
In the old books it states what is wise:
to keep yourself out of the world’s strife and to spend your short time
without fear,
also to get along without violence,
to repay evils with good,
not to fulfill your own wishes, but rather to forget them
is valued as wise.
All of that I cannot do:
Truly, I live in dark times!

when hunger ruled there.
I came among people in a time of rebellion
and I rebelled with them.
So passed my time
that was given to me on earth.

Hi, Glenn. Another fascinating poem, but I haven’t yet found a style of criticism to fit this style of translation. As before, in addition to formalizing the poem, you’ve added and subtracted quite a bit of material, and that’s hard to evaluate because I’m not sure what facet(s) you’re highlighting by doing so. Anyway, here are a few thoughts:

You need a comma after “these.”

Should a Marxist be talking about “sin”?

It’s a pity that Brecht’s two questions have become statements of fact.

“To my cost” is rhyme-driven and unclear. What is the cost for him of earning a living? Sure, we can think of answers, but I’d rather not bother if it’s not in the original.

One of my favorite Bollywood films is “Luck by Chance.” The combination of Brecht’s two sentences in L4 has the same redundance.

“Confessing” is rhyme-driven and again unclear. Who is he confessing to?

S5

“Avoiding violent crime” could mean staying out of dark alleys. Or it could mean trying not to commit rape or armed robbery whenever you feel like it. Brecht’s meaning (judging from the crib) is more general: living a life without violence.

What desire can’t he suppress in favor of what other desire? Again, I’m sure we can come up with answers, but should we have to if Brecht didn’t pose the question?

I don’t know what Brecht meant by “seeing nature without patience” or what you mean by “nature not helping him to accept,” but they don’t sound like the same thing.

It’s grammatically unclear who or what was “noted by all.” Logically, I think I know, but again I wonder if we should have to think about it at all if it’s a rhyme-driven innovation.

It’s a pity to lose “I could do only little.”

Your Brecht is more violent than Brecht’s Brecht. His wants to “reach” his goal, while yours wants to “explode” it!

“Hate against the lowest” sounds too much like hatred directed at those of low status.

“Why are we the slowest to give friendship to those we want to trust?” seems to me to obscure the point of this stanza and perhaps the central point of the poem—that Brecht and his comrades felt they had to be suspicious, violent, hateful, etc., even if it poisoned them, in order to pave the way for a better tomorrow.

The first “us” is apparently future generations, while the second is Brecht & Co., who hope that those born after will understand their sacrifice.

I found a fix that is clearer, I think.

Brecht says that he can’t help putting his own “wishes” ahead of those of others. “Desires” is, perhaps, more suggestive of lust than Brecht intended, so I used “designs,” which is paradoxically less literal, but clearer and closer, I think, to Brecht’s intent.

I don’t know what Brecht meant by “seeing nature without patience” or what you mean by “nature not helping him to accept,” but they don’t sound like the same thing. I was a bit wobbly on this, too. I think he’s alluding to the German romantic tradition of wandering in Nature to commune with a higher spiritual being and improve one’s “Geduld,” which literally means “patience,” but here seems to suggest a transcendentalist union with the Oversoul. The irony is that in wartime, Nature is anything but peaceful. He could also simply mean “I had no patience with sightseeing in the woods.”

I tinkered with this, but I’m still not happy with it. There is also some fogginess about whether “Sprache” refers to his accent or the content of the speech he has shared with others.

It’s a pity to lose “I could do only little.” I am trying to find a way to squeeze “feeble” in front of “efforts” to tick off this box.

Your Brecht is more violent than Brecht’s Brecht. His wants to “reach” his goal, while yours wants to “explode” it! This was, maybe, a bit melodramatic. I’m thinking of a scene from All Quiet on the Western Front where the soldiers’ goal is to take out a gunnery emplacement or ammunition dump with mortar fire. Scott Horton wrote an article in Harpers Magazine (Jan. 15, 2008) explaining that this passage and the previous reference to a man crossing the street refers to Brecht’s decision to leave Germany for Denmark. I had thought it referred to combat, since reference to battles two stanzas earlier and the military term “Kräfte” suggested this.

I thought Brecht was making a callback to the end of the first section where he laments “Alles das kann ich nicht” referring to the moral expectations of the old books/Bible. Here he generalizes that people are least able to form friendships with the people they most want to love because of their innate suspicion and mistrust. The poem is a study of the perverseness of human nature.

I thought about replacing the first “us” with a word like “humans,” but decided I liked the joining of the wartime generation and their more “enlightened” children by referring to both as “us.” It suggests that if those born after will forgive the savagery of the speaker’s generation, his generation will forgive the naïveté of the ones born after.
