Paula Modersohn-Becker
A comprehensive, thus great, exhibit of the paintings of Paula Modersohn-Becker is going on at Neue Galerie in New York City through September 9. Poetry fans will remember her as the subject of Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend". Her portrait of Rilke is in the show. She was a ground-breaking artist. Unique and underappreciated for the most part. This is her first museum retrospective in the United States. It's startlingly good.

Thanks for this introduction. I'll never catch up with all I've missed over the years but I'm happy to follow the crumb trail. For anyone interested but not in the neighborhood (like me). Here's a video that's imbedded in the link you provided that gives a tour of the exhibition.. That Paula Modersohn-Becker is the subject of the Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" adds luster to both artists. Last fall I took in Georgia O'Keeffe's museum in Santa Fe and fell in love with her art. Btw, the two of them look like they could be sisters: Paula Modersohn-Becker https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...-Becker_01.jpg Georgia O'Keeffe https://www.okeeffemuseum.org/wp-con...-600x753-1.jpg Thanks. Wish I could be there. . |
