A comprehensive, thus great, exhibit of the paintings of Paula Modersohn-Becker is going on at Neue Galerie in New York City through September 9. Poetry fans will remember her as the subject of Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend". Her portrait of Rilke is in the show. She was a ground-breaking artist. Unique and underappreciated for the most part. This is her first museum retrospective in the United States. It's startlingly good.

That Paula Modersohn-Becker is the subject of the Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" adds luster to both artists. Last fall I took in Georgia O'Keeffe's museum in Santa Fe and fell in love with her art.
