Sports Question

Why do you suppose ABC's televised college football games use huge school helmets, varying the college names and colors on them, that are projected and rapidly spear the viewer to mark a transition to another field shot? Some of them also sink back at transitions. Spearing the helmet of another player gets a player tossed from a game. I ask since the most prevalent long-lasting injury to football players is concussions (I played eight years and had many). It strikes me as weird generally, and today especially as my Michigan is playing Rutgers--a quarterback was speared in the head and the helmet marker busily cut back and forth as it was discussed and the spearing player was sent from the field. Is someone in production nuts?

PS I sent something similar to the ABC Sports Camp and to ABC Sports.

your Michigan?
I thought it was my Michigan!

(miserable second half,
but a win's a win)

by the way are there certain journals with an interest in sports poetry?
not necessarily exclusively sports poetry, which seems overly narrow,
but a demonstrated interest

John, your Michigan is probably much fresher than mine, which began in the mid-50’s with the BA and MA and pre-doc in English that got me to a doc at Wisconsin (who lost badly to ND today), which got me to a professorship at UCLA and places beyond, including the Soviet Union. Ann Arbor is my favorite city anywhere and I’m still debating going back again (family’s in Michigan, Jackson). I gather that you’re also a Blue loyalist and it’s been good for you. Yes?

Anyway, the only specific places I’ve tried for sports poems are Aethlon: a Journal of Sports Literature that took the hang-glider poem and Sport Literate, which denies me every time. Had some on fishing in The Yale Angler's Journal, now defunct I think. Light Quarterly, in a prior dispensation, took one on football for a feature.

You might also search Submittable for sports and related; and I did so at Poets & Writers online recently and noted a few possibilities.

Thanks, Ralph, I'll try both of these.
