Pools of June (Exot Books, 2022)

EXOT BOOKS published my first poetry collection, a chapbook, The Countess of Flatbroke, in 2006. Fifteen years later, Nemo again offered to publish a book of mine, Pools of June, with the official publication date of 2/2/22, but available now for purchase at EXOT.

Here are the blurbs:

Quote:

In this collection, filled with linguistic surprises and narrative leaps, Meriam upends the charm, ghazal, pantoum and sonnet to deliver poems of extraordinary originality. The erotic and a passionate connection to the natural world inform Meriam’s agile, imaginative poems.
—Robin Becker, author of The Black Bear Inside Me

The quality of freshness is not strained in Mary Meriam’s work. Vision, hearing and form interact in these poems to convey a sense of beauty and purpose. It takes a deft touch to kindle a new wick. How far this poet’s candle casts its light in a dark world.
—Alfred Corn, author of Unions

The translucent materials of the natural world that frequent Meriam’s ontological homes, owl-call her rich wisdom on the nature of life and existence to return to its queenly throne.
—Vi Khi Nao

Possessed of a voice both starkly candid and utterly otherworldly, Mary Meriam inhabits the varied forms of these extraordinary poems as naturally as a tree wears its leaves.
—Mark McDonnell
As if all this wasn’t joy enough, Joshua Mehigan wrote about one of the poems in Pools of June, “Dictionary of Owl,” at Root Quarterly. It’s print only, but there’s an excerpt HERE. And the poem he’s writing about is HERE.

Yesterday, I read from Pools of June live on Zoom at Carmine Street Metrics (CSM), and the video’s on YouTube. My reading starts around 1:09 HERE.

If you’d like to review Pools of June, please send me a message.

I included “the Critters” on the dedication page, and thank you again for all your excellent crits. And thank you, Alex, for creating a venue where I could meet Nemo in the first place!

Huge, huge congratulations and I would love to buy your book. I've just tried and failed to purchase a copy, and if you do, in future, ship to the UK, please let us know by posting on here.

Here is an image of the gorgeous cover.

Sarah-Jane, shipping oversea from the US has become exorbitantly expensive, and since later on the book will be available at Amazon UK, we decided not to list a shipping price for international orders. I am headed to the post office in a day or two to ship one to Mark in the UK, and I will find out precisely how much the charge is and let you know in case you want to order sooner rather than much later.

This is really an extraorodinary book by an extraordinary poet, and I urge one and all to get a copy and enjoy it.

Fantastic, Mary. I look forward to your book reaching over this side of the ocean. I remember "Dictionary of Owl" well. It's a knockout poem. Congrats!

Wonderful wonderful news, Mary! And what a fantastic cover! Long-deserved recognition, may the world finally discover your deeply satisfying work. We are all in need of it.

Memsical, your CSM reading is absolutely and utterly adorable! Your creative spirit is aglow!

The book cover is a dream, and what's within a deeper dream.

Massive hugs!!

Much love and congratulations, Mary. Your CSM reading really was amazing, it made me so happy. And the book is beautiful, inside and out. I can't wait to have it in my hands. (Thanks Nemo, for battling through snow and ice to the post office for me!)

This is awesome Mary! I can't wait to purchase this!

John Riley 01-14-2022 09:12 AM

Just ordered

R. Nemo Hill 01-15-2022 03:02 PM

Sarah-Jane (and anyone else outside the USA interested in ordering), the overseas shipping charge comes to about $20. Pretty steep, I know. About a month or two from now I expect it will be available on Amazon UK. If you would like to order one now, just get in touch with me here. PayPal works for payment.

Dear Nemo, Thank you so much for looking at the cost. Eek! I really would like to buy this book but waiting for Amazon looks like a far more budget-friendly option (I have a limited amount of disposable income) despite the fact that it's Amazon.

I'll get one once up on Amazon regardless, but, and I know this might be a long shot but is there any way you'd ever sell a 'print at home' .pdf version (not an e-book, just an accessible download) that overseas buyers could purchase for the same price as US buyers, but print out at home? Or an audiobook to download? Or another permutation that uses the affordances of digital whilst knowing that there's something special about a print book?

Sarah-Jane
(I am not trying to be awkward, promise, and I suspect that there are loads of legal reasons why publishers can't do this)

Martin Elster 01-15-2022 03:51 PM

Congrats, Mary! I love "Dictionary of Owl." I plan to order the book as soon as it becomes available on Amazon.

R. Nemo Hill 01-15-2022 04:17 PM

Sarah Jane, it has come to my attention that the book is already available for order on Amazon UK, though it will not ship until the official release date of February 2, 2022.

Martin I am curious why you are waiting to purchase the book from Amazon. You do realize that ordering from them gives the publisher a mere fraction of the profits from a direct order. I am not twisting your arm, just curious.

Nemo

Sarah-Jane Crowson 01-15-2022 04:24 PM

Nemo, thank you. You have one pre-order.

I am excited to receive the book once it arrives. Oh, it is SO good to have reading things to look forwards to in 2022.

Congratulations, Mary! It's a fabulous book from the sampling you read at the Carmine event! (And check your PM.)

Cheers,
...Alex

Only because I have points at Amazon. Plus, I get free shipping. Also I'm saving my money up. I didn't realize that they take so much off the top. So I guess I'll go and order the book now. Then I won't have to wait, and you won't have to twist my arm either, which could be painful. ;) Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading Mary's book.

I was going to wait till Better Than Starbucks was published, and post a link to my micro-essay, but two things happened. First, I happened to see this quote from Ecclesiastes 2.6: “I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.” Then today, I showed my deaf friend the video of me reading and signing a poem, and he said most of my signs (even though I just made them up on the spot) were accurate!! It made me laugh and laugh. He showed me the sign I made for breathing is a combination of the sign for love and breathing, and he liked that.

I appreciate all your comments so much. Thanks.

Mary

Thanks to Vera Ignatowitsch for inviting me to write a micro-essay "From the Mind" for Better Than Starbucks. It's HERE today, and it's about the first poem in Pools of June, how last fall this little poem landed me a new house in a dream location. Consider this news also posted in the GOOD news thread.

Ann Drysdale 02-01-2022 09:50 AM

I've asked Nemo to send me one. Longing to see it for real.
