A Death at the White Camellia Orphanage
I just read the first chapter of Marly Youmans' latest novel: A Death at The White Camellia Orphanage and it's a stunner. You can download it for free
just to sample her sumptuous prose.

To poke people a little more firmly, Lance, let's give them a link where they can download the chapter
from ScribD
or even simply read it onscreen.
For those who don't recognize Marly's name, her poetry has appeared often in Mezzo Cammin, and you can find her extensive bio there.

Thanks, Lance and Maryann. I love Marly's poetry.... The chapter is downloading!
Charlotte
Later: Hmm... it's still not appearing. Maybe it just takes a while?

Charlotte, that's odd. I can see the pages of the chapter on the screen at the URL I linked to. I got to it initially from a link provided on Marly's Facebook page by Dave Bonta. You might try that route.

Hi Maryann,
Thanks so much for the tip. I went on Facebook, and it still won't download, but it gives you an e-mail address to send to so you can get it as a PDF.
So, I await!

Thanks, Lance and Katie and Charlotte and Maryann--
I'm really pleased to see these comments on launch day, and hope that you all and others will share the news--I am throwing myself on the mercy of the great Lady Word-of-Mouth!
Not sure why Charlotte's download didn't go, but I'm glad that she managed to get a copy. Perhaps Scribd was feeling a little overloaded... http://www.scribd.com/doc/87058471/A...ge-chapter-one
For author quotes and flap copy and interviews and such: http://thepalaceat2.blogspot.com/p/d...orphanage.html Or just go to Katie's blog; she has a lot in her post...
And thank you again--I am pleased that my book was noticed, bobbing along in the sea of words!

I'm picking up this old thread to say that I just finished reading Marly Youmans' remarkable new novel, "A Death at the White Camellia Orphanage," and to encourage people to put it on their summer reading list--or Christmas gift list, or whatever list you want! It's just stunning.
As someone who has written many reviews professionally over the years, I always begin a new novel with a touch of skepticism, but Marly's book bowled me over from the start. The language is just gorgeous (her poet side really showing here!) and the story of Pip, a small boy alone on the road in depression-era America, truly moving, his character beautifully drawn. In fact, he reminded me of certain students I have taught over the years--a complicated kid!
Anyway, just thought I'd give Marly a shout out. And it can be found on Amazon.

Hi Marly,
It was great to meet you at West Chester! I've downloaded the sample to my Kindle but haven't had a chance to read it yet.
They're asking £15.60 ($24.50) to buy the book - it was £21.50 ($33.77) which is a bit "Gulp!" - especially when we've been spoiled by so many Kindle books being free - but I'm sure it's a wonderful story and when I've read that sample I can't see that I'd want to stop there, especially with all these endorsements!
Congratulations - and what about the film rights next?
Jayne
